UK birth, marriage & death certificates

Monday, 21 April, 2025

Please note that birth, marriage and death certificates issued in the United Kingdom are Crown copyright. This means that they should not be photocopied for purposes related to someone’s identification or as evidence of a person’s birth, marriage or death. If an overseas body (which will probably not be aware that such documents cannot lawfully be photocopied) has asked for a notarised copy, a “Certified Copy of the Entry of Birth/Marriage/Death” must be obtained from the General Register Office. Please see: https://www.gov.uk/order-copy-birth-death-marriage-certificate.
